Budanilkantha Temple Budinalkantha temple lies around 7 kilometer north of Kathmandu Valley.
The temple is situated at the elevation of 3,700 m. from sea level. The idol of Lord Budhanilkantha is 20 ft. in length and 12 th ft. in width and covers 882 sq m, in area.
Lord Budhanilkanta Narayan ( Lord Vishnu ) seen lying in sleeping position on the bed of Sesh Naga(serpent) as Lord Buddha and feet like that of lord Krishna, Himself an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The idol is seen holding bight(cake of holy ash) in one of his four hands This is unusual depiction as usual details in other idol shows lord Vishnu Holding lotus in his hand.
According to the legend, the idol was found buried under the land when the then King Hari Data Sharma ordered to Gopal Chronicle (vamsavali). However, the idol had been made by the order of the then king Vishnugupta of Licchavi dynasty in the year 697 (circa) of Vikram era.
Traditionally, the priest of the temple has to be a bicolor as was also ordained to the king Hari Dutta Sharma in his dream.
Regular official worship(nityha Puja) takes place everyday at 12:30 to 1 Pm.after bathing the lord by holy water and panchamrit ( fivenectars, ie: ghee, milk, honey, sugar and yogurt.)
and (worship and prayer accompanied by lights and sound of bells) at 7 Pm.
Big mela ( holy festival) takes places at the temple every year in the month of Baisakh, Jestha and Kartik( April/May/June and Oct/Nov.) Large number of devotees throng to teh temple for worship in the month of Kartika ( Oct/ Nov.).

Large number of devotees come to worship also in the month of Ourusottama (13th or extra month of lunar calendar that take place every alternate year).
Buddhists also worship the idol as large number of Buddhists devotees come to Naga Panchami, a day devoted to the worship Naga or the serpent god. ( Inquiry )
Traditionally, the king of Nepal is not supposed to enter temple premise.
The green hills and forests seen in the background of the temple is Shivapuri National Park which abound with many kinds of animals including leopard, bears and wild boars as well as about 300 kinds of bird species.
This national park has unique distinction of being the only national park in the world which is nearest from an international airport.
