About Tattoos
It seems like everyone has a tattoo these days. What used to be the property of sailors, outlaws, and biker gangs is now a popular body decoration for many people.
And it's not just anchors, skulls, and battleships anymore — from school emblems to Celtic designs to personalized symbols, people have found many ways to express themselves with their tattoos.
Maybe you've thought about getting one. But before you head down to the nearest tattoo shop and roll up your sleeve, there are a few things you need to know.
A tattoo is a mark made by inserting pigment into the skin; in technical terms, tattooing is
dermal pigmentation. The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian “tatu”—which means to mark something. What that mark actually means depends on the culture doing the marking.

The history of tattooing probably began with early humans attempting to mark themselves with
crude lines and demarcations. This is proven by the discovery of a 5000 year old man found
in 1991 preserved in ice.
Iceman, as he came to be called, was interesting not only because
he is the oldest example of tattooing, but also because his tattoos actually served a
therapeutic purpose--many were in areas of skin above arthritic joints.
Tattooing has been practiced worldwide. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, wore
facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples, and among certain tribal
groups in the India,Nepal,Philippines, Borneo, Africa, North America, South America,
Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia and China.
In Nepal Tharu community has culture of
making tattoos on their body.
Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular all over the
world.
